"Tracing the Roots of Educational Technology: My AI-Powered Exploration"

This blog post translates my experience using Chat-GPT for this assignment.

Initial Reactions

Talking with a chatbot for this assignment has been a fun experience. At first, I hesitated to believe that a chatbot could really help me with my work, but I soon saw just how helpful it can be. Getting quick feedback and being able to ask questions right away made everything easier. It's like having a friend to study with whenever you need, which is really helpful.

I noticed that while the chatbot is good for getting information fast, it doesn’t have the personal feel or careful thinking that happens when you talk to a real person. Sometimes, it seems like the answers are too simple or don't completely explain a topic. That being said, it's a useful tool to have for quick research or coming up with ideas.

This assignment helped me see how important it is to have both technology and personal interaction when learning. The chatbot is useful, but it also showed that talking with classmates and teachers can help us understand ideas better.

Confidence in the Output

I know chat-GPT gets its information from a variety of sources such as books, scientific journals, news articles and social media, but I would still use it with caution. However, I’m still pretty sure it gives accurate information in most cases. My confidence stems from the fact that chatbots like this were designed to access a wide range of information and offer thoroughly investigated responses. I understand that they aren't 100% accurate and can sometimes miss important details or give old information, so I always try to double-check important facts with other sources online rather than taking them for what they are saying.

As for my understanding of the historical development and evolution of educational technology, I believe I have a good understanding of how educational technology has changed and developed over time. It provided me quickly with key concepts to think about to expand my knowledge on and dive deeper into ideas that stemmed from the readings and discussions we've had so far in class. But I know there’s still more to learn, especially because this field is always changing.

To check what I’ve learned, I would use a mix of different ways. The same prompts I entered into the chatbot I would enter into search engines or online research libraries and compare the information between the two. If the information overlaps, then I know the chatbot is on the track and would continue to ask it questions. If not, I’d try revamping my prompts to ensure I am being as clear as possible with the bot.

I would also use what I’ve learned in real-life situations, like creating a lesson plan that incorporates technology effectively. Talking about these ideas with classmates or teachers and getting their viewpoints would help strengthen or question the information I received from the bot. If the viewpoints align with my own and the chatbots then I know that the information is of some validity.

Effectiveness of Prompts

Oddly enough I didn’t have to rephrase any of my prompts, since I’ve used the tool before, I am aware of the verbiage it takes to get the best responses. Each prompt I entered, chat-GPT responded with a full breakdown of concepts along with a conclusion. However, I still asked follow up questions to get more information and an attempt to get a better understanding of incorporating technology in the classroom.

Opportunities for Improvement

If I were to do this assignment again, I’d ask the chatbot to only provide the most important concepts for each prompt I asked. I think it would be easy to get lost in the mass amount of information it provided. I’d change my prompts to get more concise responses so that I can ask more questions and dive deeper into the topic at hand without being overloaded with information.

Use in Your Teaching

I would trust chat-GPT in the hands of my students. I believe it can provide age appropriate interactive learning experiences and could be accessible to them even outside of the classroom so that they would always be able to learn. It would also help foster curiosity and create a love for learning. Of course, supervision would be required to help guide the conversation and filter content, but most importantly it can adjust its explanation based on the child’s understanding level. Topics that may be complex to them, could be broken down to help them understand better. It’s important to know that this tool would supplement my teaching, rather than replace lessons.
